Move over, Grill. There’s a new kid in town. Well, it’s not so new, but over the past several years, the outdoor cooking world exploded with the wide availability of cooking griddles. Griddles have become increasingly popular amongst RV owners for their versatility, easy portability, and affordability.

Having spent countless hours researching and experimenting with various cooking methods while camping, I’ve come to appreciate the simplicity and versatility of the griddle. In fact, it has become my top choice for cooking at the campsite. I’m not alone in this viewpoint, and over the past few years, countless griddle models entered the market.

Choosing the right griddle can be confusing, but I’ll walk you through the various griddle options, features you may or may not need, and my favorite products available for purchase today. If you’re new to griddle cooking, definitely check out the information on how griddles work, the benefits they offer over grills, and what makes it a great option for the campsite.

If you already know you want a griddle, then feel free to jump down to the product reviews. However, if you just want to know my top choices, I provided a short list below.

Top Griddle Picks (more options below)

Griddle Types:

While all flattop griddles are similar, they have different features and applications. One big difference is size. Larger units will usually have more cooking surfaces but are less portable. Smaller ones are great for a camping flat top but may be too small for home use.

Often relative to size, a griddle will either have a built-in stand or is designed to be placed on a table. However, you may be able to buy a stand specifically designed for your portable propane griddle.

Another feature may be added cooking tools. One common one is an included grill, allowing you the best of both worlds. A portable grill griddle combo avoids the need for two separate units.

Below is a short list of the best RV griddle options for various applications. Additional information can be read in the reviews below:

What makes a good portable griddle for RV Camping?

Walking around a campground, you’ll likely see many people now cooking with a griddle. Over the past several years, especially with the rise of one of the most popular griddle manufacturers, Blackstone, they have become a staple for outdoor cooking, even causing many to abandon the grill in favor of this smaller, more portable counterpart.

While a griddle will never be able to replace a grill if you want that flame-grilled flavor, it comes pretty close. The benefits of a griddle far outweigh the shortfalls. For a camping trip, I usually choose to bring just a griddle. It’s easier to transport, offers more cooking options, and cleans and packs up easier than a grill. A portable propane or charcoal grill is cumbersome, harder to keep clean, and stores less efficiently than a griddle.

Griddle Sausages

Griddles are either made of cold-rolled steel or stainless steel. Thicker metals provide better heat retention and excellent cooking quality. However, thinner metals tend to warp with time, creating uneven cooking surfaces.

Grills vs. Griddles

What is a Grill?

We’re all familiar with the traditional barbeque grill, which many of us have sitting on our patios. Grills can use a variety of fuels, with the most popular being propane and charcoal. Grills have continuous rows of ridges that transfer the heat into the food while allowing the oil and grease to drip between them and into the flame. This is what provides most of the flam-grilled flavor.

However, the drippings can create excessive heat, and if the food is not rotated efficiently, it can quickly turn a properly seared steak into a burnt mess. It takes some practice to perfect grill cooking, but it can be worth it.

RV Grilling

When cooking on a grill, amateur chefs can mark their food with the little grill marks from the ridges or bars, adding flavor to the food as the hot metal browns or blackens it. This browning process is described as the Maillard reaction, causing sugars to caramelize from the heat. This flavor is even more pronounced when using charcoal grills. However, it’s still common to get this benefit with propane grills. So, while electric grills are available, they will produce a different flavor than one with open flames.

Grills give off a lot of heat and smoke and can only be used outdoors in a typical home setting. Grills have been around for as long as people have cooked food over a fire. While they have advanced some, the basic technology has remained the same. Regardless, they are the perfect appliance for cooking the perfect meal.

What is a Griddle?

An outdoor griddle is a cooking appliance with a flat and smooth metal cooking surface. Like a grill, it’s usually heated by propane from undeath the surface. Some people call it a flat-top grill, which is accurate since the main difference is the lack of gaps between grates.

In its simplest form, a griddle is a big frying pan. While you can buy an indoor griddle that you place on your stone, in this article, we’ll be discussing outdoor cooking griddles, which are stand-alone units for cooking.

Outdoor griddles are commonly heated by propane, but several electric units are available. While they both cook similarly, the benefit of a propane unit is that you can use it anywhere without needing a place to plug it in.

Griddle

Griddles come in all different sizes, from small portable 17″ models to extra-large griddles that rival the ones you’ll see in the kitchen at your local diner. Most griddles are rectangular and include a drip tray to scrape food and grease.

The unique feature of the griddle is its solid surface. The surface holds heat very efficiently, which allows for a more even cook surface. A better-quality griddle will have a thicker plate, but it will take longer to heat up and cool down. This helps to provide reliable temperatures for cooking your favorite meal.

Most griddles will be either steel or cast iron. The plate can be up to ¾ inches thick in some restaurant settings, weighing up to 30 lbs per square foot. That’s pretty heavy. On the opposite side of the spectrum, less expensive griddles will have a much thinner metal plate. A good quality portable unit will fall somewhere in the middle, providing an efficient surface while allowing it to be easily moved around at the campsite.

What is the Difference Between a Griddle and a Grill?

The main difference between a grill and a griddle is the cooking surface. A griddle will have smooth, flat surfaces, while a grill will have ridges or bars with openings in between, allowing food to cook directly over the flame. They can both be heated by a variety of fuels, with the most common being propane, natural gas, charcoal, or electricity.

Grilling also cooks food at higher temperatures than a griddle because the heat transfers to the food directly from the flame. As a result, the metal grates get very hot, resulting in sear marks on the food.

The griddle will not directly contact the flame and instead uses the hot surface to transfer the heat to the food. This lower temperature makes it easier to cook various foods, while the solid surface allows for more versatility as you don’t have to worry about anything falling through the grates. While you can cook things like pancakes, eggs, and fried on a griddle, you could never do this on an open grill.

If you want both options, choose a camping grill griddle combo unit like the Blackstone Tailgater.

Grill vs. Griddle Cooking Temperatures?

A significant difference between a griddle and a grill is the cooking temperatures. Grills commonly cook at temperatures over 400 °F (204 °C). Griddles have a lower heat output, settling at around 350 °F (177 °C).

Benefits of a Griddle

One of the primary advantages of a griddle is its large cooking surface area, which is much larger than a grill’s surface area. Despite this, the appliance can be relatively small, making it portable and easy to store. As such, you can cook large amounts of food on a relatively small surface.

Another significant advantage of a griddle is its similarity to a large frying pan surface. The large cook surface provides ample space to prepare multiple items simultaneously, making it an ideal appliance for cooking for a large group. You can prepare everything from pancakes, eggs, vegetables, rice, and steamed food on a griddle.

Additionally, a griddle is easy to clean, and you can easily remove grease and food particles by scraping them into a drip tray. This feature makes cleaning up after cooking a breeze, saving you valuable time and effort.

Moreover, griddles allow you to cook a single surface with different temperatures for a hot and cooler griddle section. This allows for more precise cooking and lets you cook various items simultaneously, such as searing meat while steaming vegetables. You will also have a lot more temperature control with a griddle.

Furthermore, griddles have been a staple in the restaurant industry for many years. This alone is a testament to the benefits of using a griddle. A griddle can do everything from melting cheese to cooking small food that would fall through grill grates. Moreover, griddles come in different fuel options, such as propane or electric, giving users flexibility in choosing the type of heat source that best suits their needs.

Disadvantages of a Griddle

One of the most significant disadvantages of a griddle is that it cannot achieve the high temperatures that an open-flame grill can reach. Grills typically use charcoal or gas flames to produce intense heat, which is excellent for searing and grilling meat, fish, or vegetables. In contrast, griddles rely on a flat surface that heats up from below, making it difficult to achieve the same char and smoky flavor you can get from a grill.

Another disadvantage of using a griddle is that achieving the same flame-seasoned taste you can get from a grill is challenging. Grill marks give food an appealing visual appearance and a slightly charred and caramelized flavor. When meat or vegetables are cooked over an open flame, they develop a distinctive charred flavor that many people find appealing. While adding some smoke flavor to food cooked on a griddle, liquid smoke is possible, and it’s not quite the same as cooking over a grill.

Finally, griddles are more susceptible to rust than grills if not protected from the elements. Since griddles are typically made of cast iron or steel, exposure to moisture or humidity can cause them to rust over time. This means griddles must be properly cleaned and oiled after each use and stored in a dry location when not used. If you live in a damp or humid climate, you may need to take extra precautions to prevent your griddle from rusting.
