Leveling your RV is one of the most important steps in getting set up for a fun and relaxing camping vacation. However, it can also be one of the most frustrating steps if you’re not using the correct tools. Below, we’ll review some of the best gadgets, levelers, and tools of the trade for getting a perfectly level RV every time.

The good news about RV leveling devices is that you have options ranging from low-tech bubble levels to high-tech wireless sensors. You can even install an auto-leveling system if your RV isn’t equipped with one. Leveling an RV can be time-consuming, but with practice and a good leveling device, it can be accomplished quickly and easily.

Over the years, I tested out many different leveling systems, from basic stick-on levels to the most advanced auto-leveling systems. While you can upgrade to most systems, my suggestion is to find a solution that makes the leveling process easier. My top choice is the LevelMate Pro system, but it’s not the only option on the market. Below, I’ll go over the importance and steps for leveling your RV, but if you just came for my top pick of leveling tools, here you go.

Why is it important to level your RV?

In addition to creating a comfortable living and sleeping environment, a level RV is also important for many of your RV appliances and components. For example, RV refrigerators require a level RV. If you’re RV is severely unlevel, it’s possible to damage it while in use.

The other component that’s prone to problems if your RV isn’t level is your slides. An unlevel RV will place excess strain on your slides when bringing them in and out. It can cause them to jam, which could be a big problem that’s hard to fix.

Your water system also relies on a level RV. RVs are designed to drain water when the RV is level; if it’s not, your sink, shower, or holding tanks may not drain. This is especially important when draining your tanks after a camping trip. It will help to ensure your holding tanks are empty, helping to prevent dreaded clogs or buildup in your tanks.

Finally, a level RV is important for everyday tasks, like cooking, sleeping, or even walking around in your RV. It doesn’t take much to notice your RV is unlevel. Sleeping on an unlevel bed is a sure way to get a poor night’s sleep.

How do you level your RV?

While some RVs will come equipped with an auto-leveling system, many will require manual leveling. However, it isn’t too difficult if you have the right tools. Some recommendations below will allow you to level your RV in a few minutes.

The first step to getting a level RV starts when you back or pull in your rig. First, the best way to level your RV is to start with a level spot. Sometimes, moving a couple of feet in any direction, avoiding the uneven ground, can significantly affect how much you need to raise a side or the front or back of the RV to get it level.

If you can, avoid the soft ground, which can cause your RV to shift over time. You’ll get the best results if you can locate a smooth flat surface on level ground. The best spot for setting your RV is usually the most level one.

While this can be a little more challenging with a towable RV like travel trailers or fifth wheels, a little practice will make it much easier over time. It’s a good idea to have two people with this step, where one person drives and the other checks the level.

Once you’re parked in the most level spot, the next step is determining how much height you need to raise one side of the RV. It’s easiest to level your RV from side-to-side first and then level it from front to back next. You have a few options for leveling your RV from side to side.

A common way is to use an RV leveling block setup. The leveling blocks will be placed under a tire of your travel trailer, 5th wheel, or motorized RV on one side. First, you must determine how far off level you are and then raise the RV to the required amount. This takes a little experience and guessing, but it becomes second nature after a few camping trips.

An easier way to level side to side is to use one of my favorite products, the Andersen Leveling System. This system uses curved pieces of heavy plastic that adjust as you drive onto it, allowing you to dial in the perfect amount of rise to achieve the right height. For ease of use, there is no better way to level your RV than with the Andersen levelers.

Once your RV is leveled from side to side, it is time to level it from front to back. This step is extremely easy. You raise or lower the tongue jack until you achieve level.

Finally, lower your stabilizing jacks once everything is level and place jack pads under the feet. This will keep your RV level and reduce movement as you walk through it.

Once your RV is level, don’t forget to install the wheel chocks. This will keep your RV in place and safe, preventing it from accidentally shifting while you’re parked at the campground.

Can you use jacks to level your RV?

Unless you have an auto-leveling system, you should not attempt to level your RV using the stabilizer jacks. While it can be tempting, especially if you have hydraulic jacks, they are not designed to increase the height of the RV and hold that much weight. The jacks are only designed for stabilizing the RV.
